    . . . the latest Internet trends and their implications for colleges.
  • Sir John Daniel

    "More than one-third of the world’s population is under 20. There are over 30 million people today qualified to enter a university who have no place to go. During thenext decade, this 30 million will grow to 100 million. To meet this staggering demand, a major university needs to be created each week" (1996). Related post.
  • Nainoa Thompson

    "When we voyage, and I mean voyage anywhere, not just in canoes, but in our mind, new doors of knowledge will open. and that's what this voyage is all about . . . it's about taking on a challenge to learn. If we inspire even one of our children to do the same, then we will have succeeded." "Our ancestors sailed across a vast ocean, one third of the earth's surface, and to accomplish this great feat they needed the vision to see islands over the horizon, the ability to plan intentional voyages of discovery, the discipline to train physically and mentally, the courage to take risks, and a deep sense of aloha to bind the crew together during the voyage. These are Hawaiian values but they are also universal values. They worked in the past and they will work today" (Polynesian Voyaging Society and Georganne Nordstrom, "Nainoa Thompson: In Search of History," Horizons, 1999).
  • Seymour Papert

    "The alternative to envisioning the future is getting stuck in the present. At the moment, we are squandering resources, attempting to use new technologies to solve the problems of school-as-it-is instead of seeking radically new opportunities to develop school-as-it-can-be" (Seymour Papert and Gaston Caperton, in Transforming Learning Through Technology: Policy Roadmaps for the Nation's Governors, Milken Family Foundation, 1999).
  • Paulo Freire

    "I am appealing to all of us who have escaped cognitive death by school -- who are the survivors here -- to work on modifying it. For me, the challenge is not to end school, but to change it completely and radically . . . . So I keep fighting in the hope of putting school on the level of its time. . . . We learned before teaching. . . . The name ["school"] doesn't matter. What matters to me is the determined space and time where determined tasks are accomplished. Social historical and political tasks, not only individual ones. . . . The two main tasks of the school: to get the already known knowledge and to produce the knowledge not yet in existence" (In Seymour Papert's "The Future of School," transcripts of a late-1980s Sao Paulo, Brazil, TV broadcast).
  • John Dewey

    "A democracy is more than a form of government; it is primarily a mode of associated living, of conjoint communicated experience. The extension in space of the number of individuals who participate in an interest so that each has to refer his own action to that of others, and to consider the action of others to give point and direction to his own, is equivalent to breaking down barriers of class, race, and national territory which kept men from perceiving the full import of their activity" (Democracy and Education, Macmillan, NY, 1916).

* Exact Audio Copy (EAC)
Requires Windows Media Encoder 9 installation for WMA lossless: WMEncoder.exe (10.20.08)

* Paint.NET
Excellent free image and photo editing software

* Foobar2000 Audio Player
Comment: Arguably the best audio player.

*ALShow
Comment: The most versatile video player on the planet. Plays nearly anything you throw at it. For a list of features, go to Codecs.com.

* ScreenHunter: Best free screen capture software.

* Article “Best Free Audio/Video Format Conversion Program” (Gizmo’s) by Mick Barker, 4.16.08

* Any Video Converter: Excellent converter. I’m using it to convert FLV to AVI. Pazera Free FLV to AVI converter works and is easy to use. When it fails, I got to AVC.

* “You need permission to perform this action
To disable this UAC feature: Click on Control Panel, User Accounts, and Turn User Account Control on or off. Unclick Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer. Click OK. (source Oceanborn in Tech Support Forum)

* Mouse not working in MS Word 2007
1. Open up Regedit. (Go to Start and type “regedit” in the search field and press enter.)
2. In Regedit navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
3. Right mouse click on the “Data” folder and delete it.
4. Open up Word, close it, and voila, problem solved.

* Turn off AutoComplete in MS Word 2007
As you have noticed, AutoComplete can no longer be turned off from the user
interface in Word 2007. Instead, do the following:
1. Press Alt+F11 to show the Visual Basic Editor.
2. Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window.
3. Type: Application.DisplayAutoCompleteTips = False
4. and press Enter.

For Windows XP – Not Tested for Vista

* FreeVideoToMp3Converter
Comment: Download and convert YouTube videos to audio-only MP3 files.

* SUPER ©(Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer)
Comment: I use this primarily to convert FLV files to AVI. At the site, scroll all the way down to the end of the page, and click  on “Download SUPER ©  setup file.” Pazera Free FLV to AVI Converter v1.1 is simpler to use, but I’ve had problems with the results. To convert from AVI to FLV, Pazera Free Video To Flash Converter 1 seems to work OK.

* Audiograbber CD Ripper for Windows
Comment: Works well with Windows XP but may have problems with Vista. Supposedly makes an exact copy. Exact Audio Copy (EAC) v0.99 is also excellent, but a bit harder to use.

* Flac frontend
Comment: I use this to convert flac files to WAV.

* VideoCacheView
Comment: Lists video files stored in your browser’s cache. If the file is there, it can be saved to disk.

* VCW VicMan’s Photo Editor
Comment: Excellent image editor.

* Bulk Rename Utility
Comment: The title says it all. When I have a lot of JPG files with the same filename+unique number, this little wonder renames them all with a single click. The setup for the renaming process appears daunting at first but quickly makes sense once you begin plugging in the parameters.

* Audacity 1.2.6 The Free, Cross-Platform Sound Editor
Comment: Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Windows XP users, be sure to downoad and install libmp3lame-win-3.97.zip, which allows you to export files in MP3 format. There are alternate drivers for other OSs.

* Harddisk Search and Stats v2.2
Comment: It works! And it’s simple to use. Find anything on your hard drives by filename or text in documents. I can’t live without this.

* Eusing Free Registry Cleaner v1.8
Comment: I’ve been wary of these, but this one actually works. Identifies unused registries and prompts you before cleansing. “Skip” the register widow when it pops open. You have to pay to register. It works fine after the skip.

* Mp3tag v2.40
Comment: Excellent tag editor to name/rename CD track data.

* MediaJoin 2.0
Comment: Joins video clips into a single clip. Kate’s Video Joiner (Free) v4.0 is also quite good, but I’ve had problems with the results.

* Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)
Comment: This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found. Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month. Latest as of 4/8/2008: Windows-KB890830-V1.40.exe.

* Unlocker
Comment: Solves the problem of files that can’t be renamed or deleted. Windows is somehow blocking this effort. Unlocker breaks the lock.

* SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition
Comment: Corrects the virus that pops this message on your screen: “System Error! Your system is infected with dangerous virus!”

* SlideShare
Comment: The best file storage service for sharing PDF files on your blog, webpage, etc. Paste the URL into your anchor and you’re done.

* To eliminate annoying Windows messenger service pop-ups:
To disable it: Click on Start, Run, type “services.msc” and hit Enter. Scroll down the list until you see Messenger. Double-click Messenger, then click on Stop, and set the Startup type to Disabled. (source Tech-Pro.net)
